Staff Spotlight: Hygienist Tara Allen

Apr 10, 2018 · Filed under Staff Spotlight

Tara Allen has worked as a registered dental hygienist since ’94 and has been at Hortman Carney Dental for 20 years. She’s a fixture in this office and we’re excited to spotlight her today!

Where are you from?
I moved to Rome from Cumming, Georgia. I then began working here at this office once I moved in November 1998.

What schools did you attend? What degrees do you have?
I attended Forsyth Central High School, then went to North Georgia College (aka University of North Georgia), Lanier Technical College and Covenant College. I have an A.S in dental hygiene and a B.S. in business management.

Tell us about your family!
My parents live in Gainesville, GA. My husband of 19 years, Steve Allen, is a chemist. My son, Matthew Hicks, is a Floyd County Police officer and has two small boys, Odin and Sawyer. My daughter, Savannah Allen, is a sophomore and very artsy. We also sponsor two children in Africa. We began sponsoring Beautrice when she was 5. She is now 14 and lives in Zambia. Our newest, Urgi, is a 5-year-old boy from Ethiopia.

How did you get into this field?
I always loved going to the dentist when I was a child…and up. The first thing I always noticed about a person was their teeth. I just love teeth and smiles. But most of all, I love my patients.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
I enjoy reading, gardening, arts and crafts, swimming and yoga. I like to travel, play with my grandsons and spend time with nature. I enjoy going to my hometown and spending time with friends and family. I love attending Christian concerts as well.

What’s your favorite place in town?
Spa a la Mode, who doesn’t love a little pampering from time to time?

What’s your favorite movie?
I like the movies God’s Not Dead, The Help, The Notebook, Remember the Titans and most movies with Nicholas Cage or Denzel Washington.

Do you have any pets?
We “acquired” a stray calico cat. My daughter named her “Nepeta” which is the scientific name for catnip. I just call her Cat. She is rotten!

Is there a church or community organization you’re involved in that you want to shout out?
I would like to give a shout out to Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. Come attend some time!
