Staff Spotlight: Jenny Cantrell
Jenny is a registered dental hygienist who’s worked for Hortman Carney for 13 years. However, you may not know about her love for horticulture, scuba diving, or Star Wars marathons with her family. Keep reading to learn more about one of our valued employees!
Where are you from?
I grew up in St. Charles, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. My parents, along with my two older
brothers and their families, still live in that area.
What schools did you attend? What degrees do you have?
I attended Elgin Community College where I got my Associate of Science, Kansas State University where I earned a Bachelor in Horticultural Therapy, and lastly, I earned a second Associate of Science in the Floyd College Dental Hygiene Program.
Tell us about your family!
I’ve been married to my husband Paul for 14 years but we’ve been a couple for over 20 years. He’s a technical writer for a software firm based out of Sacramento, CA. We have two beautiful and brilliant children, Lily and Liam who are 11 and 8. They are both avid readers and both long-term piano students.
How did you get into this field?
I was a horticultural therapist at Northwest Georgia Regional Hospital (that’s how I ended up in
Rome) but, with the closing of NGRH, I decided to go back to school. One of my aunts in Chicago is a dental hygienist and she sparked my interest in the field. I also knew it would allow me to continue to work with patients in the healthcare field while also being in a more flexible field as Paul and I began to have children.
What do you like to do when you’re not at work?
My hobbies are flower and organic vegetable gardening, outdoor activities with the kids like hiking, camping, and biking, water activities like swimming, boating, kayaking, scuba diving (I’m certified but don’t get to do it as often as I would like), snorkeling, etc.
My husband and I love to cook as well, and are enjoying teaching our kids about raising food responsibly and cooking it deliciously. They are learning that the world has a whole lot of different cuisines and that being an adventurous eater is one of the true joys in life.
What’s your favorite place in town?
I love Berry College! Paul’s an alumnus which allowed us to get married at Frost Chapel. We enjoy hiking and biking with the kids at Berry whenever we have an opportunity.
What’s your favorite movie and/or book?
I really enjoy going to see all the new Star Wars movies with my children. Being a busy working mom, I don’t get to read like I used to, so most of the reading I do these days is cookbooks or gardening books.
DO you want to Shout Out a community organization that’s special to you?
Our kids have attended Montessori School of Rome since each of them turned 18 months old. We’re always happy to give MSR a shout out as they offer an education that corresponds with our own goals of teaching our kids to value diversity, respect other cultures and religions, and strive to be positive forces in the world (minus capes and lightsabers, most of the time).
Now that you’ve met one of our staff members, we’d like to meet you, too! We’re always accepting new patients, so set up a new appointment today!
