Many people are self-conscious about the shade of their teeth, which can become discolored for a variety of reasons, from food and drink to age or genetics. Teeth whitening is a simple procedure that can make a dramatic difference to your smile.

There are a few different ways to whiten teeth, some more effective than others. We know it’s frustrating to figure out the best option, so we’re shedding some light on the subject!

First, why do teeth turn yellow?

There’s a variety of reasons your teeth can become discolored. First, it’s important to know where the change is taking place.

You might recognize the term “enamel”, this is the hard coating on the outside of your tooth. The enamel can become discolored – this type of staining is called extrinsic. Tea, coffee, and dark sodas, when consumed too often, can affect the change in color. Smoking cigarettes or simply eating a poor diet can also discolor your teeth.

The dentine is the layer right below the enamel. It’s more difficult to whiten this area since the yellowing is more often due to genetics, certain medications, or simply aging. This type of staining is called intrinsic. While some more abrasive toothpaste or higher caliber bleaching products can help, the best way to whiten intrinsic stains are to go to your dentist.

Over-The-Counter Whitening Kits

There are a wide variety of store-bought kits. Some more recognizable ones are whitening strips or whitening tooth paste. These can be effective on extrinsic stains between dental checkups.

Another example of store-bought teeth whitening are the slowly more popular LED whitening kits. You can’t find these by asking your dentist, and they are also not proven to work.

Laser teeth whitening only works when the light used is UV, or, ultraviolet. LED is only blue light, which is ineffective.

Activated charcoal powder is also a trending way to whiten your teeth. It’s often used as an alternative to toothpaste, or as an ingredient in toothpaste. Activated charcoal is highly absorbent and can help with gut health, but as far as whitening goes, it may not be the most effective.

Professional Whitening

Professional whitening can erase stains and brighten teeth by several shades.

While over-the-counter whitening kits are available, you’ll get a more long-lasting and visible result from a professional whitening with custom trays.

When you come to us for teeth whitening, we will make an impression of your teeth and provide you with a whitening tray to take home that is custom-fit for your mouth. After the whitening treatment, we will give you instructions on how to maintain your new color.
