…just kidding.

Finding a new dentist can be intimidating. After all, you’re trying to find someone who you’re comfortable opening up to, figuratively and literally!

Having an established relationship with a dental practice allows you the reliability of a quick check-up, the knowledge that your health is in good hands, and the comfort of knowing the people poking around in your mouth on a more personal level. We want to help you find that safe and trusted place to turn for a simple procedure or a dental emergency. Here’s how to find the best fit for you and/or your family.

Ask for Recommendations

Most of the time, our patients come to us through internal or external referral. So, if you’re starting out your dentist search, just ask around! Start by touching base with a trusted friend or relative. If your mother says she loves her dentist, check them out!

Once you find someone with a recommendation, here are some questions you should ask them about their preferred dentist:

  • Are their offices clean?
  • Is their staff professional?
  • Is their staff friendly?
  • Does their staff genuinely care about your well-being?
  • Are they gentle?

That last question comes from a concern we hear from many of our patients. There’s a pretty common fear that a trip to the dentist is going to be painful. Most of that time, that’s just not the case, but it is always good to check.

However, if you’re looking for a dentist for a dental emergency, you should know that some procedures are going to hurt. However, a good dentist will discuss the potential pain with you upfront so that you’ll be prepared for whatever comes.

Refer to Dental Resources

Maybe you’ve just moved to a new town and don’t have any trusted contacts yet. Don’t worry, there are a few resources you can use:

  • The ADA’s Find-A-Dentist tool. Search by name and, location and specialty to find the perfect practice for you and your family.
  • Your local dental society. If you live in Georgia, you could alco check the Georgia Dental Association for ADA results only in your home state. Either option will give you a list of dentists’ names, locations, and specialties in your area.

Focus on You

Of course, one of the most important things to look for is all related to you. You should be taking a few other things into consideration during your search:

  • Is the office close to your home or job?
  • Do they have convenient office hours?
  • How does the dentist and office staff handle emergencies outside of office hours?
  • Do they take my insurance? (This is a question best answered by your carrier, not the dentist office)
  • If you have Medicare or Medicaid, do they take either? (Just FYI, Hortman Carney doesn’t!)
